What We Are All About
The Blackhearts Paintball Team began around 1998 as a small family
group
to participate
in local scenario games. In a very short time the team began
attracting
like- minded
players and rapidly grew into one of the larger scenario
teams in the
south. The
team also
recognized it was more than a recreational
outlet for some paintball
players. the team
recognized there was a need in the
paintball arena that
it
could fill.
The need recognized by the Blackhearts was twofold. First, the
physically
challenged
should not be excluded from the game. Second, young people were
in
need
of direction
and mentoring. The Blackhearts attacked both with
unbounded
enthusiasm.
For the physically challenged, the Blackhearts mission is to help people
with
disabilities
experience the camaraderie and sportsmanship of the sport of
paintball. In
doing so,
the Blackhearts hope to help them to realize that the only
limits of their disability
are those
they impose on themselves.
For young people, anyone 11 years old or older is, with parental consent
are
welcome to
play with and become a member of the Blackhearts. Therefore a
rule for membership
is all players who are in school must stay in school maintain
a C or
better average to
participate. Grades must never suffer because of
paintball.
Men and Women of good family orientation help mentor the organization.
The Blackhearts
consider the game of paintball as a family participation sport.
The
Blackhearts have
no less than nine family groups consisting of married
couples, father-son/ daughter
groups, and grandfather-grandson groups.
The Blackhearts objective is to assist its members to understand the
meaning of sportsmanship and fair play. The Blackhearts teach their members
the value
of acting as
a
team. They show the youngest and oldest members the
value of teamwork, and
emphasize to all, particularly the young, they are
part
of a team and their actions and
support are as important as everyone else on
the team.
Lastly, the Blackhearts emphasize to the team members that, while its nice
to win,
winning isn't everything. The playing of the game and the camaraderie
are
the most
important parts of the game. To play fair and give your best is all
that
is expected of everyone. These are the lessons that help our members
learn to accept winning and
losing
as individuals and as a group, which in turn
builds character.
